The new Ranked season is here. The changes in this update will be rolled out gradually over the next two days as we iron out bugs. The calibration part of the new season will begin this Thursday. One big observation that we had since the previous update was that matches with misaligned roles had a meaningful impact on game quality. An example of this is when the mid player for one team has the highest rank on their team, and the mid player on the other team has the lowest rank. This tended to cause games to be really volatile and not enjoyable. In the past we used to prioritize rank spread between the two teams as one of the main criteria for the matchmaker to judge success, however as part of this update we are changing its priorities. It will now put a big emphasis on making sure that the roles are more symmetric rather than other criteria.
Dota 2 just made a major changes in the Matchmaking focusing on improvement for all players including restoration of the Solo Queue and a new requirement before joining Ranked Matched and other adjustments. Players now have to register a unique phone number to their Steam account in order to play the Ranked Matches. This is to avoid players using multiple accounts in the game that create negative matchmaking experience at all MMR brackets, and their goal is to add a new measure to reduced spam and abuse players from joining the game.
Also, having an active primary account will have a positive effect on both Ranked and Unranked match in Dota 2. Starting today, all players has two weeks to comply with the new requirement. A phone number can also be removed in their account, but it takes three months to take effect the changes — this is to ensure and prevent abuse by using the same number in multiple accounts.

The first big and quite surprising change was that Valve got rid of Solo queue in its original form. All of this is aimed at making the support role more enjoyable to make it possible to own and visibly decide games from a support position.
