And of course, most women would love to be a mum one day. Plenty of these same women have chosen – or will choose – to enjoy their 20s flirting with unsuitable men, climbing the career ladder, and generally having a wonderful time. And some of those women – some – will find that when they’re ready to settle down and have children, they can’t find the right man to do it with. They might then choose to go it alone, or simply enjoy the rest of their life the way the way they’ve enjoyed it so far. So do we really need to portray those who’ve reached their 30s without yet getting married and having children as marauding, mad-haired harpies who spend their evenings trawling online dating sites and frantically poking holes into condoms? The problem with this isn’t, as you might imagine, that men will believe it’s what thirty-something women are actually like. In my experience, they generally think, ‘Wow, here’s a confident, funny woman with a great life and some brilliant stories to tell who I’d really like to spend more time with,’ and can’t believe their luck. Also – crucially – most men want children, too. In fact, in a recent survey of single people aged , more men than women said they wanted them. As a year-old woman who doesn’t want kids, I’ve actually found it quite difficult to find a man who’ll accept the idea of a future without a family.

The truth about being a single woman over 30 examined in Singled Out documentary

Recently, I wrote here about a book of essays by women in India who are staying single. I was so grateful that the women were willing to share their experiences. But almost every time I write only about women, I wish I could include men, too. Happy, Bhaumik Shah, a single man in India, offered to share his experiences with us, and I thank him for that.

“Men and women in their 30s have done a lot of growing up,” points out James Anderson, dating expert at Beyond Ages. “They are more mature and less tolerant.

If you’re a single woman over 30 you might think it’s a jungle out there. But did you know there’s actually a “man drought” on? Or that in some places those who don’t have a partner are known as “leftover women”? The loaded terminology and expectations have led to an unhealthy stigma from which women still struggle to break free, according to documentary maker Mariona Guiu.

Guiu realised there was a problem a few years ago when she felt sad at the thought of being single and couldn’t pinpoint why. The result is the documentary Singled Out, which tracks five single women across four countries — China, Turkey, Spain and Australia. Along the way Guiu said they discovered a key problem across all cultures was “messaging”. Melbourne woman Jules Gibson features in the documentary and said she had grown accustomed to justifying her single existence. I’m happy.

I tell people it’s a discolouration in the paint, because I’m too embarrassed to admit how it got there: from the worst sex of my life. I’d had high hopes for Will, the something backpacker with a bumbling British accent reminiscent of Hugh Grant. He was undoubtedly the best-looking man I’d ever laid eyes on. I’m calling it quits. I’ll save his ego and tell him I have a stomach ache,” I thought.

Before the words had time to escape my mouth, he flipped me on top of him, plunging my face into the wall, leaving behind a glittery slick of bright pink lip gloss. Needless to say, it was certainly the most memorable sex experience I’ve had, but not for the reasons Will was hoping. I don’t believe it’s a coincidence Will was a bachelor, who, besides a high school romance, had never had a long-term relationship in his life.

Men who haven’t had committed to relationships — at least, the hetero ones — are terrible in bed. And there’s a reason for it. Women don’t tell our one-night-stands when a particular position isn’t working for us, or offer up feedback on why that weird thing you’re doing to our clitoris isn’t going to get anyone to climax. If there’s anywhere we’re more likely to fake our orgasms and our pleasure, it’s in bed with a guy we just met.

It takes most women months, if not years into a relationship, to feel comfortable enough to speak up in the bedroom.
